There are various types of Clowns recognized by the official clowning community.

They include, but are not strictly limited to:

 

Mimes:  Elegant – non-verbal

Classic White Face:  Elegant – verbal

Straight White Face:  A bit more colorful

Grotesque White Face:  Exaggerated features

White Face example -Bozo the Clown, Pennywise

 

Classic Tramp:  More flesh tone with sooty overtones

Vagabond/Hobo:  Elegant Tramp

Bag Lady:  Female Tramp / Vagabond

Tramp example – Emmett Kelley, Red Skelton

Note – The Tramp began as a uniquely American addition to clowning.

 

The Auguste:  Hybrid of White Face & Tramp

Auguste example – Coco

 

Clandestine:  Not discernible by appearance (usually)

Clandestine example – politicians, media shills
